The Woodbridge varsity field hockey team started off their AAA Cardinal District schedule with two 1-0 wins over Forest Park and C.D. Hylton. Two district games — two goals. Within two minutes of Monday night’s contest against Gar-Field, the Vikings had matched that total. By the end of the first half, they tripled it. Woodbridge scored seven goals in all during its 7-0 shutout of the Indians, improving their district record to 3-0 on the year.

“We obviously all have the ability to score when we need to,” said Woodbridge senior Audrey King, who scored a goal and added two assists on the night.

The Vikings started fast, scoring on their first possesion of the game when King hit senior Meredith Nelson for an easy goal 49 seconds into the game. Thirty seconds later, Nelson scored again, this time on a pass from senior Caroline Strand. Two minutes later, sophomore Chantal Guiterrez found the back of the cage to give the Vikings’ a commanding 3-0 lead before the Indians had a chance to blink.

“This time, we played better as a team,” said King, referencing the Vikings’ slow starts against the Bruins and Bulldogs.

Woodbridge continued to apply pressure to the Indians’ defense. Despite solid play by Gar-Field goalkeeper Karan Preet Takhar and defenders Katherine Mason and Madeline Hernandez, the Vikings found the back of the cage three more times in the first half on goals by King, Strand and sophomore Emily Baer. Sophomore Bethany Whitlock scored the lone goal in the second half on a pass from Lauren Maddox with 13:12 left in the game to cap the Vikings’ scoring on the night.

“It’s a good victory,” said head coach Tiffani Washington. “A win is a win.”
