Heading into the fourth quarter of Friday night’s game against Gar-Field, it looked as if the Battlefield football team was in for a dog fight. Leading by a touchdown, 7-0, the Bobcats were expecting a final result completely different from their 41-0 blowout of Potomac in Week 1. What the Bobcats got, however, was another comfortable win, as they poured on 28 points in the final 12 minutes to coast to a 35-0 victory.

After the game, the Bobcats were still focused on those first three quarters.

“That was our lack of discipline this week and the week before,” said senior quarterback Bo Revell of the Bobcats’ first three quarters. “We didn’t work hard in practice and it showed in the game. We took plays off in practice and it showed in the game. Mentally, that’s on us.”

Added Battlefield head coach Mark Cox: “[Gar-Field] came out fired up to play us and we came out flat. We made to many mistakes and they kept themselves in the ballgame.

According to Cox, the Bobcats’ bye week after such a dominating Week 1 victory could have been to blame.

“I think that it is a little bit from the week off and probably a little bit of reading about yourself in the paper.”

The defending AAA Cedar Run District champions sure looked ready to play against the Indians, forcing a three-and-out on Gar-Field’s first possession and then blocking the Indians’ subsequent punt, getting the ball on the 14-yard-line. Battlefield’s first offensive play from scrimmage resulted in a 14-yard touchdown run from senior running back Adrian Ingram.

It’s was then, however, when penalties came into play.

Ingram’s touchdown was called back due to an illegal shift call and the Bobcats were called for an illegal procedure penalty on the same drive. The Bobcats failed to score on the drive.

“I feel like we weren’t playing how we were capable of playing,” said Ingram.

The Bobcats were flagged five more times in the first quarter before Ingram broke a 55-yard touchdown run with 10:06 left in the first half to give Battlefield a 7-0 lead. It was Ingram’s fourth touchdown of the year and second touchdown run of 45 yards or more.

The Bobcats’ slim lead remained into the fourth quarter before Revell led Battlefield on a seven-play 38-yard scoring drive, capped by a 1-yard touchdown on a quarterback sneak. At that point, the Bobcats began to click on both sides of the ball.

The Bobcats’ defense caused a fumble on Gar-Field’s (1-2) next possession and Revell found senior wide receiver Marty Dawson for a 9-yard touchdown strike on Battlefield’s first play. Less than a minute later, Battlefield senior linebacker Corey Turner picked off Gar-Field quarterback Aaron Jackson and returned it for a 25-yard touchdown to make the score 28-0. Senior Gerald Khosa added another Battlefield touchdown on a 18-yard run with under two minutes remaining to cap the Bobcats’ scoring on the night.

“Our defense just got warn down,” said Gar-Field head coach Tom Gryder. “It just added up.”

Ingram finished with 205 yards on 25 carries and a touchdown, while Khosa added 63 yards on 13 carries and a score. Revell finished 8-for-14 for 68 yards and a touchdown.

On the other side of the ball, the Bobcats’ (2-0) defense completed their second-consecutive shutout to start the season.

“Defense pulled us out in this game. They have always been a staple of Battlefield football. Our defense is always going to play hard and they are going to give us our best chance to win,” said Ingram.

Up Next: The Bobcats will face their third Cardinal District opponent next week, taking on C.D. Hylton in their home-opener. Gar-Field will look to rebound next week as they travel to Osbourn Park.
